While on stand down I was assigned to re-qualify men on the proper use of and proficiency with their M-16 rifles. After re-qualifying several men, a man came to the firing range line and stated that he did not want to fire his M-16. By the way he was carrying his M-16 and from the condition that it was in, covered with dried mud, I knew instinctively that his weapon was not his friend. I instructed him to give the weapon to me. He didn’t hesitate to hand it over to me. I cleared the breach and looked for light coming down the barrel, there was none and no bullet. I then turned the barrel towards me and saw that the barrel was full of dried mud. You can’t imagine what was going through my mind! I asked him for an answer as to why his weapon was in the condition it was in. He said that he was drafted and trained to be a typist and then after he was in country he was assigned to combat infantrymen duty. He said he had no desire to fire a weapon. I took him to my sergeant for evaluation.
